Do you have a hero?

Someone that, (as the dictionary definition of hero goes) is either;

1. A person admired for great deeds or fine qualities
2: a person who shows great courage
3: the chief male character in a story, play, or poem

Personally, I don’t find this question easy to answer. I’m thinking that possibly a child would though…so I asked my 11-year old.

Her answer: “Hmmmm….I’ll have to get back to you,”

To which I replied… “OK…” 🤨

She continued, “I don’t really use the term hero, although there are some people that I look up to.”

She definitely has a point there…

Does a hero have to be someone who does great things? Or, is it simply someone we personally admire?

I came across a somewhat recent interview with Matthew McConaughey talking about his book Greenlights. And in the interview he talks about his definition of heroes.

“Every hero doesn’t do this great big hero thing. They do the simple thing over and over… and they stick to it,” he said.

Cool. 😎 Makes sense to me.

Upon hearing these words, thoughts of my dad popped up.

…pictured here:

Me: age 1
Him: age 18

In his life plan, I am sure that raising a baby was not anywhere near the top of his “must do” list…at the age of 18. But, I happened, and here he was “sticking” to what he needed to do.

Being a dad.

I post this today in honour of him, as well as the man that instilled this sense of integrity and commitment in him…his father, my grandfather (he would have celebrated his 100th birthday TODAY). 🎂🥳❤️

He was a hero to all who knew him. His life was simple and his devotion to his family was solid.

It takes courage to stick with your commitment to play the lead role no matter what.

So, whether it is a relative, a co-worker, your child’s teacher or your bus driver…challenge yourself to spot a “hero” today and, if the moment is right (and you’ve sanitized 😉😷) give them the respect that they deserve. 👍🏻👏🤗

They are all around us. Doing their part over and over…and over…to keep us all on track…and moving forward. 💪🏼😎☀️❤️
